Can an employer legally terminate you based on an inaccurate date in your past employment history?

Can an employer legally terminate you based on an inaccurate date in your past employment history?

I was terminated by Citigroup because the date on one of the jobs that I had listed on my application didn't match what they verified through that employer. The start date that I had listed was May 1996 and in actuality, the date was really April 1997. I was asked to give an explanation as to what I was doing as far as work during the 11 months between the time that I said that I started (which i admitted was wrong and told them that I guessed) and the time i actually started the job. I told them that i worked at a job for about a month before that but that wasn't enough. Do they have a legal right to terminate me even though I told them that I wasn't 100 sure about the dates?

Remember when you signed the application and in (small, very small print) there was a few sentences that said falsifying information would be grounds for termination or not getting the job. Had you been on the job long? Maybe they felt you were not pulling your weight and just decided to terminate you and then If anything comes up they will just use the excuse that you lied on your application.

*Just find another job. I would try to use the time not working to get your employment history accurate, so that the next time you won't have a problem with the application.

I really think the reason was a copout.

You falsified an application and that is grounds for termination.

Now, that type of error is not as grievous as say, being in prison and not listing it, but if you were a marginal employee it would be enough.

That is an easy way out for an employer.

Oh yes, thats falsification of personal records and work history and is grounds for termination.

Yes, they can. A year or close to a year with no explanation does sound odd.

smedrik
yes they can.

You falsified and applications.

Also that aside an 11 month oversight from just over a year ago. i think that as an employer I would be a little bit concerned about your lack of attention to detail.

Yes they can!
Unless you are specifically covered by a work contract you can be terminaterd at any time, for any reason, or for no reason at all.

Yes -- you basically lied on your resume. Makes you seem not trustworthy.
