Can an employer make you work at a different office without compensation?
Find answers to your legal question.

Can an employer make you work at a different office without compensation?

The office is 50 miles further away and they will not pay time nor mileage. At time of hire this was not discussed.
Additional Details
It is my regular place of work. I have worked for the corporation for three years. In the past, when asked to travel, I was compensated for time and mileage. Now I'm being told, due to the economy, I must work two days a week at this other office, 50 miles away, owned by the corp. or have my hours cut. No contingencies have been placed on paper.

generally if you must travel away from your normal work-site for a one day assignment then that travel time must be paid under FLSA.

since this is a permanent assignment this may not qualify and the employer has made it clear that this is uncompensated time.
the fact is they can cut your hours if you don't want to make the drive but......
in most states refusing this significant change in employment conditions and this significant change in hours (if you refuse to drive) will probably qualify you for partial unemployment insurance.

talk to your employer about the changes and your concerns and then make a decision on your future. when they realize the potential cost of cutting your hours they may change their decision and do the right thing.

Sure they can. Or they can just cut your hours to three days a week, or even lay you off altogether. Sorry, not the answer you wanted, I know.

If that's your regular workplace, probably not. But if you are an hourly employee and usually work at one office but are sent to another, you might have an FLSA case. My company pays hourly employees travel time when they have to go to a satellite office.

Yes.

US law is 'handshake' employment. If you do not like where the job is you must find another job. The only way you can expect to be compensated is if they require you to 'clock' in and out 50 miles away from where you work.
