I have a really good job interview on wednesday and I know they drug test. I have been taking painkillers because of a back problem though. Can they exclude me even though I have a prescription for the medication and I pop positive on the test for opiods?

I agree with the other posters, you should definitely tell them what prescription drugs you are taking. If, that particular drug shows up as a preliminary positive, what will happen is that a doctor will call you. This doctor is called the Medical Review Officer (MRO) and is a contracted doctor for the company. They will ask you about your prescriptions and you may have to provide proof about what you are taking. If that matches with what showed up as positive, then the MRO can make a determination as to whether the preliminary positive is a true positive or if it is not. If not, then the results come back as negative and the employer does not even know that the MRO called you (unless you tell them). In that case, you have nothing to worry about. Good luck! |

Take the prescription with you when you drug test and tell them you are on those meds. Then it should not affect you at all. |

I get asked this a lot. When you drug test, they will ask you if you are on any meds. Tell them up front what you are on. If you test positive, you simply need to show proof that you have a prescription (not taking a friends pills), and you will pass. Also, it depends on what panel they are using to test you. Not everyone tests for the same drugs....although there are the basic 5 most employers test for at least.

When we did drug tests in the ER, we always recorded any prescription drugs that might show up on the test to explain their presence. Now what the employer did with that information , I don't know. |
