Can an employer pay for an individual health insurance plan? Is it against the law?

No, it's not against the law. Many employers will pay at least a part of the premium. However, they must pay the same percentage for all workers in the group. They can pay for salaried workers and not pay for hourly workers but if they pay for salaried they must pay for all salaried.

Depends on what state you live in I suppose. The last place I worked we had health insurance paid for 100% by the employer. I would doubt it is illegal.

Good Luck

why would it be illegal? you want your employer to pay for some of it b/c its very expensive.

An employer offering health insurance is subject to state laws. (Texas) and must offer certain coverage which is excluded by individual plans and thus do not comply with state law. If an employer pays for any portion of a health plan, he has formed a group plan. Which must be in compliance with state law, or he is subject to fines and the liability of a claim that will be denied by the individual plan, but required by the state law under group insurance.
