Can any lawyer look up your criminal record?

In Canada, that is. I know in the states anybody can look up anybody's record, but not here, only certain people. If a lawyer is my prospective employer, can he look up my record on his own? I know he can request a criminal record search to be provided by me, but as I have a good work reputation, I don't think he will.
