i think it is legal but isnt the correct way to resolve things or inform someone that way. the employer should have of asked to see your workmate and told him or her in person. it is not legal but it is incorrect.

If that is company policy that you signed when you joined the company. Sure they can. Is it the right thing to do. No!. Their afraid of confrontation.

if it were ever challenged in court it would likely not stand up for several reasons - firstly there is no company letterhead or dual signature to confirm that the issue has been discussed and the employee fully understands the problem - secondly how do you keep a copy of an sms on file?

problem with this is - your workmate will have to get fired before they have an opportunity challenge this in court.

No this is highly unprofessional and extremely rude of the employer, a formal written warning has to be put on paper and two copies one for your pal and one for the business, it also has to be signed by the employer and your pal and a wittiness, your employer sounds like a Muppet does he not realise that if your pal got a new phone and Sim then there is no proof of a warning! kick his *** and go see citizen advice beuro. : )
