Can i be fired for taking a few hours off for a dr. appointment? with a note? ?

If I were you, I wouldn't leave this to people on Yahoo Answers. This is not just important for you personally, it's important morally, and it's a complex legal issue. Open your yellow pages and call someone who does employment law. The calls are usually directed to paralegals who will almost always answer your questions without a fee.

I have to know, are you thumbs downing everyone who asks you to consult another source? If so, I mean, opening a yellow pages and making a phone call isn't exactly brain surgery, and it's in your best interests to do it. In case you don't know how to answer questions such as mine, you have a menu bar under your question. On that bar, the last option is "edit." You click "edit" and get a drop-down menu. On that menu, there is the option to "add details." You click that and add whatever you need to add.

if your boss denied your request for a personal day but you take it anyways, that is grounds to be fired. it has nothing to do with the doctor or getting a doctor's note. it's doing something that your boss said you cannot. is there any way you can ask your boss to slip out for a few hours to go to the doctor or can you reschedule for an evening or weekend appointment?

Yes, sorry, but he's not required to give you time off. Ask if you can make up the time - he might go along with that.

You're not in school anymore, so just as you don't have to raise your hand to ask a question, a note from a doctor does not suffice as an excused absence to save your job. They have grounds for firing you if you take the day off without clearance. Also, if you do take it without proper clearance, your boss will see that as direct insubordination and will respect you less for it. I'd see if I could get a new appointment scheduled- and ask if they have after hour appointments.

If your appointment is for a serious medical condition, and you work for a place with more than 50 employees, you might be eligible for family medical leave act (FMLA) leave. Check your HR handbook, or someone in your HR office. Otherwise, this isn't school. They don't have to excuse an absence just because you brought a note. It is not likely that they will fire you, however, if you explain the reason for the time off, and agree to only take the necessary time, rather than a whole day.

you can be terminated, but, you can file for unemployment or file suit in small claims for wrongful termination.
