Can i get a internship/job in advertising with a petty theft conviction?

i was arrested at 17 for assault and battery when i stuck a cigarette in my ex bfs neck during a public confrontation. that was 5 years ago. i never had it expunged (2nd act of stupidity).
7 months ago my family's home was foreclosed and i had a 6mo old at the time. i opened some bills in the car right before going grocery shopping. all i thought of was (ironically) money, future, baby... i stole 30 dollars worth and paid for 40. caught. arrested. convicted petty theft. now they are both there. i have internship opportunities in advertising (which im VERY talented in and im also doing freelance etc) and im almost done with school. just wondering if anyone knows how much this will/wont matter (with or without experience and skills) and how concerned should i be?.... because ive been freaking out about this type of situation since that day. too bad my anxiety over the future lead me to potentially screw it up way worse...

Short answer? It depends on your employer and their policies. I've worked at a company where a coworker stole tens of thousands of dollars of merchandise from wal-mart (no joke) and ended up getting arrested STILL passed his background check and didn't get his job offer revoked. That same company a recently hired person tested positive for marujiana and had his offer revoked.

The exact opposite happened at a similar company I worked at several years ago.
