Can my employer hold my paycheck just to insure that I show up for a meeting?
Find answers to your legal question.

Can my employer hold my paycheck just to insure that I show up for a meeting?

My employer just posted a memo stating that "A meeting has been scheduled for Sat. Apr. 25. Paychecks will NOT be given out until after meeting. No exceptions, no excuses"
Our checks are normally given out on Fridays, and are for 2 week pay periods. This seems unjust for them to give such short notice that our checks will be held. Granted it's only one day, but I'm poor and need money prior to payday every week.
Just to include it, I live in KY.
Additional Details
Memo for employees was posted 4/22/09

As you said it is just one day, but if you want to know contact your legal aid bureau.

If you are an employee, you have 72 hours after payroll is processed to get your check. After that, the employer is not allowed to withhold it.

So, if your pay period ended on Thursday, they can wait until after the meeting on Saturday. If your pay period ended on Wednesday, they are in default and can be fined.

It's probably officially legal (because it's probably within the timeframe required to provide checks)... however, it's just plain DUMB!!
What is this going to accomplish except get people perturbed. Is Sat even a normal working day?
I know it's a tough job market, but you may want to start looking for a job where they value the work the employees do.

Good luck.
