My former employer disclosed to other employees and independent contractors that they were going to fire me before actually doing so. In California, is there any recourse for me?

YES.......you can file for unemployment insurance and if the employer did not have cause to terminate you then you may qualify for benefits(if you meet all the other criteria) |

You weren't wronged, you didn't unjustly lose your job, you suffered no loss except for a little embarrassment.

How did you hear about this? If it was through the employees, how do you know they are credible? You would have a tough time proving that the employer breached any rules of confidentiality, because the people they told still work there and are probably not willing to testify against their current employer.
California has wrongful termination laws, however, apprising other employees of your exit, is not prohibited by law. To maintain continuity in their business operations, they have a duty to apprise other employees when someone leaves the company. When they do it is up to the employer.
Right now, you should focus on why you were let go, and how to make your performance in your next job better than your last.
