Can my hubbys employer fire him for filing for partial unemployment?

My husband was hired for 40hrs/wk. His employer has been giving him about 20-25 hrs/wk. We started a claim and now he father says we shouldn't complete it because his employer will probably fire him. Can they do that? Is there any protection (legally) to prevent that?
