basically this girl at work just decided she wasn't coming back to work. i came in tonight (my night off, and very hung over from a reception) since she didn't want to work. i'm supposed to be off tommorow also but they want me to come in so they can train a new person. i'm saying no. can i be fired for saying no when its supposed to be my night off?

barry, this happens ALL the time and i am the only one who gets called to come in. i had plans i had to cancel to come in here and sorry but for only $7.00/hr. no beneifts, no vacation time its not worth it. plus the manager doesn't even KNOW HOW TO DO THE JOB which is the sad thing

will they fire you? probably not at this time it depends on the staffing situation and what kind of employer. the fact that they asked instead of just scheduling says they are trying to do the right thing..........
so should you, if you are a team player and care about your fellow employees as well as employer you will work.
will this effect your future? definitely, which way depends on the decisions you make and how the employer feels about those decisions. |

I'd have handled it by just reminding them that that was going to be my day off, and since they ASKED, I'd have asked right back "Well, if I come in and thus give up a day off, can I take the next day off?" |

Well OK, if it isn't worth it, then you have every right to quit. But otherwise yes they can fire you. |

The are depending on you. Let them sit and you may be hurting yourself. Take some aspirin, stop for a large cup on coffee and muddle through.
We're in the REAL world, not some make believe world where things like this never happen.
