Can my job fire my for showing up to court? ?

I'm getting a divorce and I work at a toy store. The store that I work for will not let me have time off because of the busy shopping season.

If you have a court date they cannot prevent you from going. I would give them notice as to when you need to be off. They must allow you time off to go to court.

Here's the legal fact: If you are working in a work-at-will job, which most are, then a company can let you go for any reason, or no reason at all. And you can leave for the same. Unless you are working under a contract that speaks to this, or are part of a union, the former is the situation.

If you care about keeping your job, then it might be good to speak to your manager and/or HR about the situation and let them know that the dates you need to be away are inflexible, and why.

It is unfortunate that your company is not able to recognize the value in being flexible with your situation. Are you actively seeking other work as well?

Yes they legally can. Try to find someone to switch shifts with you.

You have a court order to appear in Court, no they cannot fire you for this. But they may look for the next best reason.
