Can someone ask an employer why thier application was denied and get no explation?

My brother applied to a job and had a interview that interview went great and was scheduled a second interview. After the second one he went back to check the status of the second interview and the manager said that she was waiting to hear from his previous employer. So he went and talked to his previous employer and let them know what was going on. She gave my brother her number to give to the place he was trying to get the job he interviewed for twice. So he gets up there to give the manager the number so she could contact his previous employer but before he could give it to her she told him that his app was denied. so he asked why it was denied and she said that all she could tell him is that the app was denied and good luck. So is he not entitled to a reason for is app to be denied

He can certainly ask them why his application was denied, but these days with everybody being so very quick to sue for any reason most companies do not want to say anything for fear it could turn in to a lawsuit. Tell him to give that person a phone call, nicely ask them the question and let them know that you want to know this so that you can learn from it for the next time you apply some where else for a job. Was there something during the interview, a bad answer??? Maybe he/she can give you some feedback.

He can most definitely ask, but they are under no obligation to answer.

It could be that they hired someone else before they even got to the point of checking on his references. Or the interview didn't go as well as he thought.

Have you ever gone on a date that you think went great only to find out that the other person wasn't as into it as much as you. Well it's kind of the same thing.

no explanation has to be given.
the prospective employer does not need to have a reason, they just did not hire him. your brother can ask but since he already did don't expect any additional information.

in the future he needs to completely and accurately fill out an application and have all the info for his references with him.

they may have decided not to hire him simply because he was disorganized and unprepared for the interviews
(not qualities employers are looking for)

You are basically selling yourself to an employer, if you decided not to buy an item at a store would you feel like you needed to explain to the reason to the clerk??

We're in a recession, thus it is an employer's market. However, courtesy is a needed thing. Many employers today don't even send a post card stating that you did not get the job; they just hire the person and go on...business as usual.

My advice? If a company does not respond, you have two choices...re-apply for the job when it comes open again, or just move on and try another company.

Funny thing...I have found, on life's highway, that usually, God lets the truth fall out about the company that didn't hire you eventually. Usually, via a scandal or several bad internal incidents come to light. Then, you thank God that you didn't work there.

Remember that little company called 'Enron'? Nice place to work...until folks started losing their butts due to internal mismanagement.

No, he's not entitled to a job there, or a reason why he wasn't hired.

Nope, just like he isn't entitled to a reason of why he wasn't hired, but I can tell you why.

He didn't listen to what he was being told.

The manager said she was waiting to hear back from his previous employer...which meant that she had contacted his previous employer.

He decided to "speed the process up" by not only contacting the manager at his old job, but bringing the interviewing manager a number to call...most people DO NOT do that and it sends up a red flag.

Managers don't like it when you don't listen.
