Can someone make a company an L.L.C. without using a Lawyer?

Can someone using a D.B.A. go ahead and make their company an L.L.C. just by filing with the Secretary of State or do you always need a lawyer? Any help with this would be truly appreciated.

I have a fictitious name registered with the State, I just want to protect myself and partner with an L.L.C. but I don't want to hire a lawyer if it really isn't necessary.
