This depends on the type of job you are applying for. Generally the questions are as follows:
Dates of employment
Position
Last salary (if you signed a waiver they can ask this question)
Reason for separation?
Would you re-hire?
Would you recommend this person? If not why?
If they answer yes they would recommend normally ask for the person's strengths and weaknesses. |

they verify dates, salaries, sick leave and vacation information and request any additional information. its a very tricky business because legally you can't say bad things about a person -- the worst you could say is you wouldn't rehire them. |

In truth, companies can ask anything they want to, but many companies will decline to answer all but a very few things.
Things that my company will typically provide answers to are:

*date employment ended
*job title when employment ended

Were you a good employee, how was you attendance, work well with others, folllow instructions, how long employed, verify why you said you left the company, would they hire you back if you wanted to come back. Those are some of the things, sometimes try to verify wages and job duties too. It all depends on the type of job you are applying for. |
