Can someone with a felony conviction for weapons use become a Social Worker?

And do you know if college Social Work major programs train people with criminal backgrounds?

Yes, they often do (many of them, if not all). You can not be turned away from school because of your criminal record. It is actually common for certain professions (mental health/social work/counseling) to have a high degree of those who have been in trouble with the law (drugs/theft/assault). The harder part comes in finding somewhere once you have the degree. But, there are places out there and you will just have to look around a little. Don't let it get in the way though! There is plenty you can do if you put your mind to proving that that person is not you now.

This will vary to some degree by school.

However the short answer is YES to both. Most programs allow you to be a student with a felony conviction. The university may require you to go through a process to determine if you are a risk/threat to others. So the weapons charge could be a challenge - the length of time since the conviction and what you have been doing will help (the longer and more involved you have been socially the better). If this was a youthful indiscretion that is better than it happened last year.

As for working as a social worker. Your record may keep you from some jobs (and some internships) however, in my career I've had many students who were convicted felon's and got good jobs afterward.

its possible but unlikely because people misjudge others so much.

Social workers are government employees. I don't believe that you can get a government job if you have been convicted of a felony. I know you can't serve in the armed forces if you've been convicted of a felony.
