You have been made redundant. There are various requirements the employer has to comply with to make people redundant.

If you have been employed for less than 1 year you have virtually no rights.

You are entitled to redundancy payments and notice if you have been employed for over two years and you should be consulted about the redundancy before being made redundant. If you are being made redundant and qualify for a redundancy payment you should be given notice, which will depend on your contract and/or your length of service.

I suggest you get all of your documents in relation to your employment and redundancy (including your contract and anything you have been given in relation to your redundancy) and attend your local citizens advice bureau.

You should do it sooner rather than later as there is a time limit, which is under 3 months, if you need to go the the employment tribunal.

Good luck

Okay, if the reason given was that there is not enough work for you, you have not been sacked - you have been made redundant.

If you have been there less than one year, you do not have full employment rights yet and there is not really anything that you can do.

If you have been there more than one year but less than two years, you do have full employment rights, but you would not be entitled to redundancy pay. BUT they should have paid you in lieu of notice, and your contract would explain whether this would be one week or one month.

If you have been there more than two years, then you are entitled to be paid in lieu of notice PLUS you should get redundancy pay. The exact amount varies dependent on your age and your length of service.

So, basically, yes they can let you go just like that, but it's likely that you should have received at least some money if you'd been there long enough. If this wasn't the case, then contact ACAS for advice on what to do next.

First of all look at your employment contract and see what it says.

You need to tell us where you live. Labour laws vary considerably between countries and even within countries.

They are NOT required to give you any notice at all when they are making you redundant - I have been made redundant twice, and on both occasions I was told to clear my desk by the end of the day as they was no work.

Depends. I'm not a lawyer, so this isn't legal advice. However...

Generally, you're employed under one of two situations. Either you're an "at will" employee or you have a written contract with your employer.

An "at will" employee can be terminated at will. Maybe there's not enough work. Maybe you're considered a disruptive influence. Maybe you aren't producing enough. It doesn't matter. (Now, you can't be discriminated against in termination. If a company has 50 employees, and they fire the 5 oldest...or the 5 minority employees...there could be grounds for a discrimination suit.)

A contract employee works under a written, defined contract. It runs the length of the contract (unless otherwise specified). And in those cases, usually you can't be fired except for specific actions enumerated in the contract.

If you were an at-will employee, you can be terminated. And there's no requirement that you be given notice, or paid for being terminated.

If you want, check with an employment lawyer.

Depends how long you have worked there and what sort of contract you had. There is a redundancy law but I think it only applies if you have been there for a year or more.
I do know that some time ago it was 2 weeks pay for every year you had worked there. Not sure what it is now though.
Go and get some advice, if you're not a member of a trade union go to the Citizens Advice Bureau .
In any case I would have thought your former employer would have " seen you alright " for a couple of weeks at least.

Good luck

In the UK, no matter how long you have been employed, you are entitled to a minimum of 1 week's notice. Check your statement of written terms of employment as the notice period may be more.

Depending on how long you have been with the company depends on whether you could take any further action. If you've been with them for more than 2 years, I personally think you should have been made redundant - as surely thats what not having enough work means. Try calling ACAS for advice on that.

Good luck

Depends how long you have been there. If under a year then you have no leg to stand on.

If you have been there for 2 years or over and worked at least 16 hours per week you are entitled to payment in loo of notice and redundancy pay which is a weeks wages for every year there and if over 45 1.5 weeks wages for every year for redundancy money, either the have to give you a redundancy notice - 4 years there = 4 weeks 3years = 3 weeks etc. I am in similar situation at moment, you can check it all out at www.acas.co.uk or check 'what am I entitled to' - UK it doesnt matter whether or not you have a contract- all the rules apply.

i don't know about the laws in your state but if a company is slow on business they can cut jobs without notice to keep from going under.
