Can they dismiss me from my Sales job?

Can they dismiss me from my Sales job?

I work for a large UK company in Sales and have done for two years. I have never been anywhere near my target (which I can prove is unrealistic) and my company is making sounds to dismiss me for 18 months of poor performance. Under British employment law can they dismiss someone for poor sales where there is no misconduct and clear displays of pro-active effort or is this scaremongery?
