They can extend your probation or trial period if they want.
Obviously for them to do this it means they are not happy with your work and want more time to see if you will get better.

if you are in the UK, trial periods have no basis in employment law. They are merely a management tool and your trail period can be extended as long as the company sees fit. They can dismiss you without reason within the first 12 mths in any case, so the ending of a trial period does not give you any security. |

Yes they can, although they should tell you why. Have a look at your staff conditions of service. |

Well, they can probably do whatever they want. You may need progress in a certain area before they wish to commit.
You might want to ask them if there is any room for improvement. If they don't have an answer, then I agree- they should decide one way or another! |

It's perfectly legal.
But rather than worrying about whether it's legal or not, you should be thinking about WHY they are extending the trial period.
Some part of your conduct hasn't been good enough.
Are you late sometimes, unreliable? are there parts of the job your not very good at? Have you had conflict with the team? etc...
You need to find out or work out why they've extended the trial and put it right, otherwise you will be shown the door within the next 3 months. |

There's nothing illegal about it, but they could have handled it more promptly. It sometimes depends on the situation - for example if you been off sick they sometimes can't deal with these things until you get back. You could raise a grievance over it to say that it is unfair of them to extend after the original end date has already passed and see what that gets you.
A question though - were you aware during the intial three months that they had issues with you, or is it just something they've brought up in recent days? |

You neglect to mention country & state/province. However, generally speaking, where there is a trial period, the employer can terminate, extend the trial, or put on "permanent" anyone at the end of the trial period.
What did your employer tell you at your review? Either your performance is not good enough to risk permanent employment yet, or the economic situation is so dicey that they have contingency plans to let a batch go if things don't improve. Carefully analyze everything your employer told you at your review. Work on doing your job a whole lot better. Otherwise, you will be among the first to go. Extending a trial period always means "shape up or ship out." |

It is not perfect that a trial period is extended. But one thing is that, In the trial period a person not perfect, so it must be extended in one month. It is legal. |

yes it is legal, it means you are not working out like they expected and if they extend your trial period they do not have to offer you any benefits and can be let go with out any fuss |

It depends. have you had a review? Did you get feedback? What did it say? What's your job? did you come with experience? Have you had training?
The law stipulates a minimum of a 3 months' probationary period but this is subject to the employment contract the company draws up. Basically, the law ensures that unless you are told otherwise, after 3 months you can't be deemed unsuitable for the position. However, if after 3 months the company feels that you have potential but don't seem to be responding well to training, or are not fully following conditions of your contract, for example punctuality, or you're taking a lot of time off sick, they can extend your probationary period.
