I worked for a party plan company. Technically you are self employed but you are actually under contract by a company and have to report to a manager weekly.
I became pregnant and very ill. Due to this illness i was unable to work and 'bank £20 a month' as the contract says you should as well as phone my manager every Friday with my numbers.
After 2 Fridays missed calls I was dismissed. Despite the fact i had told my employer that i was pregnant and very ill. I had doctors notes for another job and have been off on SSP for the last 3 months.

Id like to add that i did contact the company. I spoke to my manager within the weeks but couldnt contact her on a friday because i was too ill and quite often in hospital......

What country arae you in. It will determine what the applicable law is. Also, if you only check in weekly and work independently, you are likely classified as a contractor/consultant/independent contractor. So you do not have the same rights of an employee. |

They can sack you for any reason, you are not an employee.

The company which hired you for work can terminate you when you became unable to work. And you didn't contact the company for 2 weeks. Despite your illness, the business has to operate regularly, and you cannot expect it to accommodate you. They cannot keep the position open for months.
