My Friend worked at Wal-Mart and he said that his manager was telling him about this no quit policy. He found a new job and said that the woman wanted to hire him right away and that he could quit without giving a 2 week notice. When he tried to do that his manager said that he could quit, but he was going to see to it that he didn't get that job or any other job because he failed to give the 2 week notice. His boss didn't call the place for a refferal, but what I want to know is can an employer really stop you from getting a job anywhere else all because of a policy like that?

Most jobs, unless there is a written contract saying otherwise (like doctors have, for example), are considered "at will". Meaning, they can let you go at will and you can quit at will. However, two weeks notice either way is considered customary and courteous - but not required. Your friend's manager is being a bully and should be reported to Walmart's HR. He cannot legally contact the new job and stop their hiring. He could only give a bad reference. |

If you have proof this manager really threatened this, you can own Wal-Mart. This is unethical. It's appropriate to give a 2 week notice, but not required. |

I'ts not really "nice" to quite without giving a two week notice though it is done all the time. Your employer is only allowed to say a couple of things about you when called for a referance:
Did you show up to work on time?
Did you get along well with other employees?
*Did you give a two week notice?
Would they hire you back?
these are the things that can be asked and answered. so if the prospective employer doesn't like the answers.....;
BUT the former employer MAY NOT lie about you call you names or throw in his/her personal opinion. They MAY NOT discuss your religious beliefs. by law those things are illegal if you can prove them.
So yes his previous employer may stop him from getting a new job if the prospective employer doesn't like the referance.But no he cannot stop him from getting the job if the person still wants to employ him. |

If the boss knows were your friend got hired he might call and talk bad about your friend. But he can't prevent him from taking another job. You friend probably will not want to use them as a reference though. :) |

What he means is that he quit without notice. So when another employer calls and asks for a reference they will say he in ineligible for rehire. Tell you friend not to list the position if it was only for two weeks it looks bad anyhow. There is no "list" for quitters without notice. There are lists for things such as "possible retail theft" for people who companies feel may hae stolen but no charges were given.
The manager was probably angry and just meant he would never give a reference to your friend. |
