Can you be fired for giving notice?
|
On at least one job I had, I gave notice that I had a better job coming up in two weeks and was planning on quitting then. But instead of appreciating the fact that I gave them time to put an ad in the paper, they fired me on the spot. Is this illegal or just poor business management? I had been with the company for a year and had just gotten a meager raise the month before.

Not sure but my husbands old job would let them leave after notice given with pay because they gave notice because they did not want any problems on the last days there I guess or lazy employees.
I am guessing this is bad management. |

Yes, every State in the United States is a right to work State so they as well as you have no obligation to keep you employed with their company. |

It's highly unprofessional, but yeah, it can be done. Some places don't take quitting well. |

You know, you did the right thing by giving two weeks notice. But employers have been known to fire someone before they would have left. |

It isn't illegal, and isn't terribly unusual. Depending on your job, they might or might not want you to stay on after you have given notice. |

So long as they pay you for the two weeks, yes, they can let you go on the spot for submitting a two week notice of resignation. Yes, this does happen but not that often. Usually if an employer does this, it's because there is a conflict of interest (you're leaving for a competitor) or they don't trust you (there have been issues with you while working there.) If they refuse to pay you for the notice period, they are then liable.

Why not, they fire for other reasons too. I can understand why. They need someone to work. |

It's legal for a business to not allow you to work after giving notice (although it's not technically being fired). They don't want disgruntled employees getting ideas in the heads of the other employees or pulling shenanigans with the workplace or the customers. It's actually good business management although it is lousy to the employee. |

Yes, this is common practice. You can wait and give official notice on the last day you actually need to work. Only do this if you already have a job lined up and sure the company will let you go when you give notice. This way you'll have a paycheck, and a new job back to back...be smart about this, don't tell any co-workers your plan.

It is not illegal. Crappy, sure. Illegal, no. Some businesses are just that nasty to their employees. With my last job, I waited to give my notice, and gave them only 4 days notice because I knew if I gave a full-two weeks, those last two weeks would have been a living hell. |

That's illegal unless they had an agreement with u that you can be terminated at any time for any reason...or if they fired you for a specific reason... |
