Can you be sacked from work if you hand in a sick note?

can you be sacked if you are ill and hand in a sick note from your doctor for 2 weeks the company I work for are short staffed I asked for a weeks holiday because I wasn't well they said no I went to the doctors and they signed me off for 2 weeks do I hand in the sick note or not I am not pulling a sickie I am genuinely unwell and worried about keeping my job I work in the uk for a well known tyre fitting company who are not above bullying tactics threaten you with dismissal for anything they don't like.

It doesn't look good that you went sick because you couldn't have holiday.
Your company will have disciplinary procedures.
You could get a warning for not following rules or contract.
Dismissal for a first offence seems a bit severe.

lots of companies have a sickness absence policy... get a copy of yours and adhere to it to the letter..good luck

No you cannot... You must give them the sick note though. An employer cannot by law go against a Medical note..
You should leave that employment. They are no good and you should respect yourself more than to work for a company that treats their staff with such contempt..

Think UK Dad has it right . I know lots of people who went sick if they couldn't have holiday when they wanted it. But do hand in your sick note. You won't have a leg to stand on if you don't! I also agree with the person who said it's not a company I would like to work for if they sack you for being poorly!

it's a common mistake to think that you cannot be finished while off sick[with a sick note] any employer should know there way round things like sick notes and it's a relatively simple job to fire any one

legally they cannot sack you but it doesn't mean they wont, i work for a large well known company where people have been sacked although they have presented a sick note, the line taken by the management is- take us to court. good luck

I slipped on ice getting off a bus going to work,even though i got up and walked after and went straight home after,my boss phoned me as i went in the door and asked what happened and why i didnt eurn up for work,so i explained to him what had happened,he asked if i woul be in work the next day and i said yes,but ididnt know i would be in so much pain as the day went on,i went a whole week in pain before i went to my doctor who stated i damaged the bottom of my spine,gave my an extra week off,i have trouble walking so how can i get my cover note to my employer,i have to get three buses,can i get some one else to hand it in for me. i suffer from depression and have a oedema where my leg swells up.i sit on the till all day,the company i work for had a letter from my doc to state that i need to excercise my leg every hour ir walking,they still havent done anything.in off sick again as i cannot walk,i get dla for my mobility.when im well enouth to go back can i appeal against a disaplinary as they havent kept to there word ,they did say back in january that they will make adjustments for me but they havent
