why would you need a lawyer to change professions/careers?

If you are under contract, I would get legal advice. You can be sued if you break the contract. The best thing to do is have your lawyer negotiate a contract break with your employer.

If you're not under contract, you can simply resign.

You just quit your job... unless you are under some type of contract, and then you just have to get a lawyer to see if there is a clause for escaping the job...

But a career, you just quit the job and get a different one.
