Career. My son is battling a difficult past; and has turned over a new leaf; ?

How does he battle a poor background check when looking for employment?

He discloses when he goes in to the interview - don't make a big deal of it - he just says, "I've made some mistakes in my past but I'm older and wiser now and have moved beyond that phase of my life." Don't try to hide it. He may not get the job he wants - a lesson for him that all things have long term consequences and if we're lucky it's not all bad - but if he gets out there and does the jobs he doesn't want to do for a while he'll have that base to move on. Good luck.

The best thing to do is to be up front before the check is run.
I had an older woman come in to apply and she gave me a note with her application explaining her past.
I'll be honest, most employers will still pass on hiring somebody with a record but I did hire her.

You should talk with a lawyer about having his record sealed or expunged. It depends on the charges and the time that has passed.

(Just for the curious- She was like 60 or so and had a gun charge. The letter explained that she lived in a very bad neighborhood and while getting on the bus a policeman saw the gun in her purse and arrested her)

Be up front with every p[prospective employer. Tell them everything. Bring in letters from people who knew you then and now. If the past includes criminal, bring in adjudication.

tell him to be 100% truthful and up-beat about it, it does pay off... I went off the rails a couple of years ago, got a criminal conviction, lost my job, friends, family and major debt the whole works. But only after being un-employed for 12 weeks i got another job, by being totally honest, and flexible and yes after 15months i am still there, happy - ok still got all the others problems but my employer gave me a chance and i took it....Good luck to your son, he will get thro it x.

Ah yes- I have been down this sad road. Unfortunately, I resorted to lying. I kept applying and sending resumes until somebody either forgot to check or somehow I slipped by. But then you risk someone finding out later and firing you for lying. The bad thing is you will never get hired if they find out to begin with so I said what the hell and went that route. It was difficult but I was able to find and keep a job and stayed out of trouble for 5 years which is usually how long they go back. Another problem is that even if they say they go back five years if you have been in trouble in the county in which you live they find out anyway. The only solution I found was to move to another state- keep my nose clean (thank God its 8 years now) and start over. I wish him luck

Another approach is to be honest and tell your interveiwer up front you have a past but have turned your life around. This will immediately turn 80% of people off but since I was too afraid to try this my guess is it would probably work about as often as my trying to lie and getting caught and the plus is you wont have to look over your shoulder.

Difficult one. Do not mention it at all because generally our English brothers are judgemental and gossipmongerers so it's best kept quiet. Apply for work and fill in the gaps with caring for sick mother or something.Do not be honest because it will never pay you in England. Fact.As long as there are no credit checks he should be alright. Very few companies check criminal records.
