Cash value of accrued vacation?

Am I legally entitled to receive the cash value of my accrued vacation if I leave my job for another company (not being fired)? ...or is it a matter of company policy whether I receive it. It was plainly stated in the HR docs at my last company, but not at the one I presently work for. I work in California. Thanks in advance for your help.

In California, your accrued vacation is a vested benefit, meaning you cannot lose it. If you leave the company, you have to be paid for the value of your vacation, and paid just as quickly as you would be for your final day of work.

It varies company to company. If they are not paying you, you could always just take a few weeks vacation between the two jobs (or if you told them you were going to do that maybe then they'd offer to pay you for the vacation). |
