Conditional Offer which fell through...what can be done?

I received a conditional offer from an employer. When I was younger, I ended up being convicted of a misdemeanor, which has since been expunged. The court told me I could answer "NO" on the background form when applying for a job, so that is what I did. The potential employer did a background check and the misdemeanor came up. It had been expunged from CCAP and the Courts, but not on the State site. I forwarded the information from the court system stating that it had been expunged along with a letter of explanation and was told that the information had to be forwarded to the director and I should hear back the next day...It's been 5 days and I still have yet to hear back. I've contacted HR twice and I am supposed to start orientation next Monday. I put my 2 weeks in at my current job a week ago and now if this doesn't go through, I am out of a job. I am not getting answers from HR as to whether or not I am going to be employed there and I don't know what to do. Is there some kind of law or something that states that the employer needs to contact the person within a certain amount of time? Should I just go to the orientation if I haven't heard anything? I am really at a loss here. I think it's very poor on how they're handling the situation...at least a phone call would be nice letting me know that they're still working on the situation...but I haven't even gotten that...what can be done??
Additional Details
Thank you allardja. I will definitely attend the orientation if I haven't heard anything.
