Confused, Please help with advice.?
|
My husband, recently seperated from the Air Force, he did seven years security forces and three years of recruiting, he has a bachelors in criminal justice and a grade point average of 3.9. This week he even signed up to go back for his Masters', it has been four months of him searching for employment, we have two small children and are down to our last pennies. Any advice as to what to do to get this phone to start ringing? He applies all day long on here and has tried working with staffing agencies and it seems we are getting no where..Please help.

Serious answers:
1. There are special job fairs for veterans, usually at the state Department of Labor office (what used to be called an unemployment office).
2. Take the civil service exams for police officer, prison guard, etc. Someone with both a degree in criminal justice and military training should be good at jobs like that.
Joke answer:
Q. Any advice as to what to do to get this phone to start ringing?
A. Borrow lots of money and do not pay it back. Eventually, bill collectors will call and your phone will ring. |

The worst thing to do is answer your question with a question, but you left out a bunch.
What does he want to do?
You stated "He applies all day long on here" - I hope you don't mean he sits on the internet applying for jobs. Some research stated that only 10% of available jobs are listed in ads. He needs to get off his *** and hit the streets. (Don't mean that in a rude way) Every job is not on the internet and/or in the newspaper.
Assuming that he wants to stay in security or law enforcement - police & sheriff only test once or twice a year (if that much depending on where you live)
He can apply at various security departments until he gets the job he wants. At least its work. With his credentials he could walk into anyplace with security officers and land a job. Some pay well and even offer a % of what you catch walking out the door. If you are close to any casinos, their security can pay better than actual police depts.
Staffing companies, temp agencies usually place people fast.. I'm curious why they didn't find him work.
And in the meantime, maybe he can look outside the box - look for a job doing anything he can do.
But - get out and hit some places. Don't rely on want ads and certainly not the internet.
Maybe consider ANG or reinlisting if all else fails?
Border patrol is always looking now too.
Also, with the degrees - he can apply to FBI, ATF , DEA, etc. |

Have him go to the state employment office.
First, companies are required to list their openings if them if they are government contractors.
Two, there jobs are listed on their internal computer system.
Three, veterans are given preferential treatment.
As was stated before, only a small percentage of jobs are listed on the Internet. |

Applying for grants is slow however when he goes to get his masters and that is done it will be a great thing. Education is more important than the short run problems. The bills will get paid and if you have family that is able to help you, now is the time to ask. Look at the overall picture and it should be clear that he is doing the right thing and needs your support in his goals. The stress of not getting the support in his endeavors could be a handicap for him. Please understand you have to give him a little room to make the right choice. Help him achieve the goals he has set and in the future there will be no looking back and wondering if only I would have done the right thing. |

He may actually be over-qualified for some of the positions for which he is applying.
How about police work? Or maybe you'll have to leave where you live now -- there may be a low unemployment rate there. |
