Find answers to your legal question.

Could i get fired for being late to work?

So i was late for work today. Alarm didnt go off. Was 2 hours late for work. never done anything wrong before. Is there a chance I could get fired for this?
Additional Details
Just to add ----> This si my first offence ever. been working there for half a year.

Never been late before.

And I live in the UK not US.

You could. Usually companies will give you a couple chances so that they will be less likely to have to pay you unemployment.

Unless you have a contract stating that coming in late involves instant dismissal, you'll be OK. The company would have to give you two warnings about being late before they could fire you. As long as it was a once off and you don't do it again, you'll be fine.

Yes there's a chance - in fact you could get fired for no reason at all if you are an employee at will, which you probably are if you are in the US. But if you have been a good employee for a long time, it's unlikely they'd fire you for this. If it's your first week or something, or you have a record of poor performance, you'd likely be on thin ice.

Yes, you will definitely get fired. You will probably never get employed again because of this horrendous act of carelessness. Just kidding. It's not that big a deal. Be apologetic. Go to sleep at a decent hour so you don't rely so heavily on the alarm clock to wake you. If you go to sleep early enough to allow for 6 to 8 hours of sleep, chances are your internal alarm clock will wake you naturally. It seems that alarm clocks lose their effectiveness after awhile.

Did you call in to explain where you were? I would say that being chronically late will definately lead to some type of action. My neighbor said her boss loved her, she took advantage of his good nature, went to work late quite often and called in sick on Saturday's often as well. She got fired. Be careful. YOu surely don't want to be looking for a new job with this economy.

Yes your employer is well within his/her right to fire you. But, things happen, and if you have never been late before then that will (hopefully) be taken into account.

Chances are you are not the first time, but if you keep being late, you probably are :) Hope I helped!

probably not for your first offense, do not be a repeat offender though.

yes, you can, but I dont think they will. Training and mentoring an employee takes money and resources. To fire someone for fist offense lateness is too much.

David
If you do it often, yes.

If you do it once, well, we're humans, not perfect.
I'm sure you'll be forgiven.

Doe's anybody know what the current law in the U.K regarding late attendence for work? I was under the impression 10 minutes was something not be questioned or required to answer with an excuse! My company says 5 minutes late and no questions but that's there rule. I'm interested knowing if there is such a law as detailed above.
