Did I get unfairly treated at this free clinic?
|
I went to a free clinic today with a friend of mine. I wasn't in any pain, but I did have a concern with my health. My friend did have a pain. We waited outside the clinic since 5 A.M, 2 hours before the clinic opened. It was in a predominantly Hispanic area, but I am not Hispanic, though my friend is. We waited for four hours until finally my friend and I were told to leave because they said they would not be able to see us because there were too many people, and that we should try some other clinics. They also said that they see patients not based on how soon they got there, but the severity of a person's situation. The thing is, I did not see any other people that looked like they needed immediate medical attention. In fact my friend seemed to be the one that deserved priority over everyone, but instead they kicked us both out, and I believe they kicked him out because he was with me. My friend has a friend that works in this clinic and because of that he was able to talk to that person over the phone and go back, but I was left out. My question is, did this clinic have the right to turn me away? It seems as though since I wasn't hispanic, I didn't belong there, and this just makes me feel soo bad. Additional Details I completely understand what you are saying Raven, but how do you explain my friend being turned away as well? I don't know what these other people had for sure, but I know for a fact that my friend should NOT have been turned away considering his condition.

Agree with Raven. Any kind of health care system with limited resources must use triage. Triage means that the first priority is patients who are in the most serious need of medical help. I don't know what kind of pain your friend had, but it is quite possible that there were worse cases at the clinic that day.
I speak from personal experience, that someone who looks fine may not be. The last time I went to the hospital, I looked fine. I actually had sharp chest pain, and when they took my vitals, my heart rate and blood pressure were so high that I set off alarms and I was triaged as a high priority patient. The time before that, I had a fish bone stuck in my throat, and while it wasn't life threatening, it could have caused some damage, so I was seen before other patients who just had a fever (probably a virus, not much the hospital can do).
Again, I don't know what kind of pain your friend was in. Some serious pains would be chest pain, pain in the lower right abdomen, and an extremely severe headache, which could be signs of a heart attack, appendicitis, or a brain aneurysm, respectively. Other kinds of pain may be quite uncomfortable, but do not represent a situation where treatment is critical to your life. And again, because this is a free clinic they have limited resources. There may only be one or two doctors on duty for everyone who goes there. This is just a guess, but it is possible that this free clinic may be micro-managed by the state or county, and, for instance, have to provide X amount of appointments to pregnant teens or something.
At any rate, I don't think there was any discrimination there. |

If they were unable to provide you with care, and they gave you alternatives, there really wasn't anything else for them to do. Just because people don't look sick doesn't mean they aren't. Someone having chest pain might look just fine, yet be having a heart attack. Pain is not always more important than other factors. I've seen people be hysterically crying and call an ambulance for a splinter, while another person drove himself to the hospital with a gunshot wound. Only someone who is trained in medicine can determine which patient is most in need of care.
The clinic has to have some way to determine which patients need to be seen first - it's called triage. Would you rather have waited all day, only to not be seen at all? |
