Did i get fired or did i quit?
|
Ok so during the summer of '08 i started working for this amazing company and i loved it.
I was working at cash register. well one day i needed money for lunch so i borrowed approx. 6 dollars for lunch.
Well to make my register even i didn't input some stuff on the register.
About 3 months later someone was stealing tuns of money so they look through the tapes to see who did it. so The bust the "big fish" if you would like to call them that.
But there were also people like me who took money and got "suspended until further notice" so i decided to quit so i wouldn't get fired.
Everyone else got who got cought ended up getting fired but the thing was they took like around 100 to 400 dollars.
So my question to you guys is when i apply for another job should i put down that i got fired or did i quit?
Or should i even mention the company?
Is there any way i can check to see like a permanent record to see if they say i got fired?
I'm looking for a new job and don't know what to do! Additional Details Yes I understand that 400 is is just as bad as six dollars please I think about my mistakes every day I'm not a bad person I just made a bad choice in my life and I am trying to learn every day.

The answer is quite simple, and surprisingly most people here got it wrong:
You quit while you were suspended.
You can tell future employers you quit, and when they ask why, you should say they were investigating fraud on all cashiers and suspended them all, and you did not want to wait around and not be paid.
When they call your old company, your old company will either tell them you quit during the investigation while you were suspended, and that either you had a clean record and were found to have stolen nothing, or that they found your register was $6 short one day but no action could be taken because you quit first.
It's all a matter of what you think your ex-company knows or cares about. Are they going to care your register was $6 short? You know you stole it, but all your old company knows is that you counted change incorrectly, or something. They might not even care.
So if you think your record there is safe, you should list it as work experience. Other wise you're going to have to explain that gap in your employment history if you don't list it, unless you're a student or something, and then you can just say you were busy with school and not working.
Just don't tell anyone employers you stole $6. |

You quit. If you want to discuss this with future/prospective employers you can tell them ALL cashiers were on suspension, because of some theft. You didn't want to wait around so you quit.
If they inquire it may or may not come up. The "amazing company" ultimately may not even have registered the $6 other than perhaps having a "short" day. You're the one that knows you took $6, not anyone else. Next time you need $ borrow from a co-worker or manager.
In the future keep your hand out of the drawer, $2, $6, $100 is ALL the same to an employer----it's about TRUST! |

You were fired for cause. You may not want to mention that to your next employer tho. Most employers would not hire you based on your theft.
You do realize that borrowing a few bucks from the register IS just as bad as stealing $400? |

Dont even mention the company! Even though you only stole a little, you still stole and if your possible employer calls them you DEFINITLY will not get the job. And technically, it sounds like you got fired, but no big, it could have been much worse- like jailtime. |

So... you stole 6 dollars from your till, and you're worried about this now?
Sigh... Honestly, if I was a manager at that "amazing company" that you loved so much you stole money from them, I would tell anyone you applied to that called me for a reference that you were caught stealing from the till.
No... play it safe... you never worked there. And stop stealing. |
