Dif. in incorporation laws from statetostate-bad idea to intern in DC if have intents of later working in NYC?

I am writing on behalf of my fiancé.

I will be going to grad school in DC next year. He is probably going to delay law school for a year to hopefully work as a paralegal/legal assistant (<-- are those the same thing?).

He is interested in international corporate law. My question is... he would like to work one day as an attorney in New York City. Since I will be in DC, he would like to work as a paralegal in DC before law school to live with me.

Is this a bad idea to work in DC if he eventually wants to work in NYC? I have heard that the incorporation laws are very different between states. Would learning a different set of laws than those of NY state be a detriment to his future career?

(also, my fiancé is a genius, perfect lawyer material (not just me saying that), just participated in the Vis Moot in Vienna, and already has a masters degree in globalized law from Paris, (he's French-American) but his LSAT scores are low - he would like to go to Columbia law school- He has applied this year to law schools; he is still waiting on a few including Columbia, but has been rejected from all of the ones he has heard back from so far (because he insists on going to a top school). Do you have any tips (or connections with Columbia :) to help him get in?)

Working as a paralegal (legal assistant and paralegal are the same thing) in D.C. as opposed to New York will not make a huge difference in terms of securing a position as an associate at a New York law firm.

All state corporation statutes are based on the Model Business Corporation Act so the laws under each state's corporation are strikingly similar from jurisdiction to jurisdiction.

More importantly, law school graduates, generally speaking, don't have a clue about specifics of their state's corporation laws when they begin their careers as first year associates in corporate law. New York law firm's base their decision to extend offers of employment to law school graduates almost entirely on the law school from which the candidate graduated, his or her class standing/GPA from that law school, and his or her performance as a summer associate at the law firm in the prior year or 2 years.

Additionally, most large law firms tend to incorporate their clients in Delaware for various reasons which means that working as a corporate paralegal in a large law firm in any jurisdiction will often involve working with Delaware laws.

If he has only taken the LSAT once, I recommend he take an LSAT prep course if he has not already done so and retake the LSAT. If he is as intelligent as you say he is and his LSAT score was low it could mean he is simply not good at taking that kind of test, and an LSAT prep course can dramatically increase a person's score when they have high aptititude but poor test taking skills. He can then include an explanation with his submission of his LSAT scores explaining the discrepancy when he tests much higher on the second score.

Also, if he ends up working for a prestigious D.C. law firm, an outstanding recommendation from a Columbia Law School graduate at such a firm might go a long way in helping him secure an admission.

Good luck.
