Since you mention make up, I'm guessing you're female. If your hair is neat and clean, I can't imagine a reasonable excuse for this. It sounds like discrimination to me, but there may be business reasons that would make this acceptable. Did they tell you why, after a year, they want you to change your appearance? |

First, while it may be discrimination, it is not ILLEGAL DISCRIMINATION. |

It is legal for a company to require a certain standard of appearance. I've counseled many employees about style of dress, makeup and even hygiene.
Do you want to keep this job? If so, my advice is to do as they ask.
My daughter is a hair stylist. She looks great for what she does. Her makeup and hair style are very fashionable and attractive -- but neither would be appropriate for the office in which I work.
In turn I would look rather dull if I were to work in her salon. It's all about what's appropriate for the job. You have to decide what is most important. |

I used to work with a lady that was "stuck" in the 80's and she thought she looked good!
She would wear makeup so heavy, you could scrape it off with a knife in extremely heavy colors. Her hair was "normal" colors...but she tried to combine all of them, blonde, brown, red, black...into one hair style.
However, if you asked "her" she thought she dressed good...she did...for a nightclub.
It is NOT discrimination, and I personally think it is stupid to lose your job over something like that...without checking with an IMPARTIAL individual to see if they are right.
I think you may want to see a lifestyle consultant or a hairdresser because I would wager that your appearance is probably extreme and you are not aware of it. It is very, very difficult to approach such subjects with employees, and I would bet that they have been concerned about it for some time to go to the trouble of calling a special meeting about it.
PS: To those that think it's discrimination, it's not because 1) they are not having the conversation with any other female besides her and 2) her appearance is not related to her race/religion/culture. |

They have NO right to ask you to change anything about your appearance as it is discrimination and they can get into alot of trouble by the law. Ask them why you are being asked to change NOW when you looked the same way when they hired you and it was ok then. |

They've already shown discriminatory action; you should talk to an attorney. They have displayed extraordinarily bad judgment;they've humiliated you and hurt your feelings and you can definitely proceed against them in court. "Go see a makeup consultant?" Wow. Go for it and sue them. You will win. That's outrageous. |
