Discrimination on Resume?
Find answers to your legal question.

Discrimination on Resume?

Has anyone ever been discriminated against during job applications / interview because the company doing the hiring 'thinks' that you live too far away?

Has anyone else experienced location discrimination?

I have, several times, and I now never put my address on my resume. When asked during an interview about where I live I answer 'close enough to never be late for work.'

There is no such thing, legally, as location discrimination. Employers have a right to decide whether or not you would reasonably be able to make the commute to work daily, and on time.

By not putting your address on your resume, I would think that you're missing out on a lot of potential opportunities as most would see it as a red flag. They might assume you're applying from out of state and would ask them to pay your relocation expenses.

I've never had a problem.

I think part of the reason you might be having trouble getting a job though is you seem like your hiding something by not giving your address, I can't believe you even get interviewed without an address!! Most organizations want to run background checks on your, even retail, and they need an address to do that. Also, they need to have your address on file for them to file tax information, benefits, send a last paycheck. In case of emergency.

And most importantly, you have an attitude problem if that is your answer. That is why you don't get the job, first and foremost, second because your too dumb to realize everything I stated above. But they don't want to explain it to you, because they aren't interested in you once they realize you have a bad attitude.

Disclose your address and if they ask about the commuting distant or time, just say I don't really mind driving/taking the bus, and I'd really love to work for your company. Or, I am looking to relocate closer to the area, for (make up an excuse, to be closer to my parents etc), however I am waiting until after I have a job to relocate.

I don't think that is discrimination. I was asked that when I was interviewed for my current job because I live 40 miles away. The main reason employers ask that is because people get tired of long commutes, they can be late because of traffic or road conditions, and in an emergency situation they like employees to live close enough to get there quickly.

I wouldn't answer the question with the answer you stated, because it sounds like a smart@$s answer to me, and that might be turning employers off. I'd use the name of the community or residential area or "just a few minutes from...." instead of the answer you're giving.
