My job is bad. So bad that there is one woman who is allowed to treat the other employees any way she likes, which is mostly through demanding, controlling behaviour. She has no problem starting terrible rumours about people and/or reporting every little "misdeed" to the boss. For example she told the boss that I "continually short the company by leaving 20-30 minutes early everyday". This is a complete lie, as I usually stay late. But my boss isn't around much and takes her at her word. So I got a written warning. I might also add that my boss, who is also the owner, believes everything she says unconditionally.
I have been looking for another job, but what can I do in the meantime? Is there any legal recourse? Can I quit and collect unemployment due to the abuse? I am located in Illinois.

You can not collect unemployment if you quit. You can either make an appointment to discuss the situation with your boss, or you can confront this woman. Inform her that you are aware of what she does and you want it to stop immediately, or you will file charges with the labor board. Now this is a completely empty threat, as the labor board couldn't care less. But people like this woman usually don't know their head from a hole in the ground, so you should probably get away with it. Start bringing a digital camera with you to work each day that has a time and date stamp on the photos. Photograph yourself each day in your place of employment at the time you should be leaving work so that you have proof that you are not leaving early. And photograph her doing anything she shouldn't be doing. Do not leave this camera out of your reach at any point during your workday, because I guarantee you she will take it. And if she asks what you're doing, tell her. Let her know that you are not intimidated by her or her behavior. Bullies never bother people who are not intimidated by them, because they are nothing but insecure without the spine to actually deal with someone one on one. |
