to fill out a W-4 the employer does not have to see a social security card.
to fill out an I-9 form they must see the document used, which does not have to be a social security card you can use a birth certificate for the I-9.(there are other documents you can use but SS card and birth cert are the most common).

you can apply for a replacement card on-line at:
http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.pdf

YOU NEED TO REPLACE IT ASAP.

Most employers will ask for a photo copy.....or the original........get a replacement.........

I`d give your next employer your number and tell them you show them the card just as soon as you can get it,also if you have any legal document that shows your # it will generally work.

Most employers will want to see the card, to verify the number. The employer is REQUIRED to fill out an I-9 form and see proof that you are legally permitted to work.

Apply for a replacement card.

You have to get it replaced. Companies are required by the federal government to actually see the original (not a copy) social security card of all people they employ.

It's free and isn't a big deal. Just go to your local social security administration and bring along your driver's license and your birth certificate (they may not even ask to see your birth certificate) and fill out the application they have. You'll have a new card within 7-10 days.

A birth certificate or a bank card with a photo ID should be sufficient. As long as you know your number, you should be ok. Its a good idea to have a replacement anyway, but it takes a month to get.
