I have retained a lawyer, but have not yet officially filed for bankruptcy. When contacted by a creditor/collection company, I have been advised to give them my attorney's number and that they no longer have a right to contact me regarding my debt.

the whole reason you've retained an attorney is for he/she to be your voice. You don't need to file bankruptcy for your attorney to speak for you. That happens the minute you hire an attorney |

Yes, they can that contact you and garnish until you file a BK. Generally, once the BK is filed the automatic stay comes into play, and it stops all collection calls and activities immediately. Some people bluff about the BK, and creditors will want a case#. Shortly after filing they get notice electronically or by mail,from the BK court when you list your creditors in the BK petition. |

yes, refer them to your attorney. The only way your wages can be garnished is with a court order. |
