Do employers really care about cover letters?

Yes Yes Yes -- and Thank you letters too!

These are your chance to really get them to take a close look at you. The Resume is generally good, but the cover letter is your chance to wow them and get that interview.

The thank you is important too as it keeps you in their minds while they are thinking of the decisions they need to make, and shows them your dedication to the job and your ability to take all steps necessary.

Not having a cover letter doesn't always mean you aren't considered, but if they have 5 with and one without -- why would they take the one without -- it shows lack of effort.

YES! This represents your first impression to the company. A well written and designed cover page will impress the recipient positively that they are dealing with a professional applicant. Whereas, as poorly written cover letter or lack thereof would cause the recipient to possibly feel that the sender was not as serious about their application or the recipients.

Yes, I do. I don't read it for content...I look at is as an example of what type of written comunication that individual is going to be sending out under my company name.

If it looks like it was written on a 4th grade level...then that is about the quality of work you are going to get out of an individual.

Yes, they do. This gives the employer an introduction to you and what you are looking for.

A cover letter can kill your chances or really get to a great job. If the grammer, spelling and organization of the letter is incorrect, kiss the opportunity good-bye.

Also the cover letter can help you from wasting your time, the reader will see that what you state your goals are, may or may not fit their needs. Thus, you will not be waiting for a response.

ALWAYS follow up with any serious opportunity that you would like to pursuit.

Best of luck!

Yes, even if they think they don't. Writing a cover letter gives you the opportunity to introduce yourself and offer some selling points to the recruiter or manager. It also demonstrates your communication skills.

Cover letter should be shorter than a normal letter with 3-4 short paragraphs:
1st: Indicate the position you're applying for, where you learned of it, and state your interest.
2nd: Selling points; emphasize qualifications, briefly describe achievements. Could be split into 2 paragraphs, but only if you have to.
3rd: Closing- inform the reader of your resume and request their review, let them know you'll contact them within a certain period of time, and thank them for their time and consideration.

Absolutely! The cover letter introduces the applicant and specifies the position tthey are applying for. The cover letter also displays the applicants motivation level and committment to spend a little extra time to be noticed.

Well, I don't really know. But if the job posting says include a cover letter, you better send a cover letter. Not doing so may be enough for someone to kick out your resume. If you are creative, you may be able to come up with some different words that may catch someone's attention.

Yes, they do. Because the cover letter has only one purpose. It is a snapshot which helps the reader decide whether or not to invest any additional time in your resume. This quickly illustrates your ability to formulate a concept and present it in a concise format. This is even more important as email has made the formal correspondence letter impractical, if not obsolete.

To make your cover stand out, take the time to avoid a spam or generic appearance. A little website review will help to meld your resume with the interviewer's name, title and actual services instead of the company in general. If necessary, a telephone call to the switchboard should provide some pivotal information. Apply to the person not their post office box. Good Luck.

Yes-as long as they are short. You have 1 or 2 paragraphs to motivate then manager to look further.
