Do i still get my course?

Im currently serving in the British Army in Afghanistan and have recently handed in my notice. However, in sept 07 i returned from Iraq, at that time also having handed in my notice, when my unit said if i signed back on (cancel my notice to leave) and go on tour to Afghanistan (which im now coming to the end of) i could have a very beneficial and sought after course.

Now ive handed in my notice i probably wont get the course, despite having played my part of the bargain and had to spent 6 months running around this sh*thole.

Question is: do i have any grounds against my unit if they totally rule me out from doing the course, having given them what they wanted? Could i take it further (and win) from a legal perspective?

To answer your question, the Army is your employer. If the course is something that they have arranged in order for it to help with your future army career, there is no duty on them to pay for your attendance - you won't be having a future career with them.

In short, doing the tour in Afghan was not a specific contractual thing to swap for the course. There is no way that a court would enforce this. The only chance that you might have is if the course is non-army related. In that event, there ought to be a moral duty to put you forward to ease your transition into civilian life - fair's fair, after all. Have a word with your CO about this, to see if a proper recommendation can be made for you.

He's in the BRITISH army, Elle, and he's in Afghanistan. Last time I looked at the US Constitution, there wasn't a word in there about the US president having the authority to send BRITISH citizens ANYWHERE.

Since you obviously can't read and don't comprehend what you read, do us all a favor and stay home on election day.

As for the course:

I've put a star on this because several of my contacts are Brits and they may have an answer for you. Here in the US, a lawsuit against your unit or the armed services isn't easy to file and sure isn't easy to win. If your tour of Afghanistan is ending soon, wouldn't they be sending you to take this class once your tour is over? Have you talked to your commanding officer to ask what has to be done for them to follow through on the course they promised?

Firstly, I really admire what you for serving your country.

Unfortunatly, I dont think you will be able to pursue your employers legally. You are doing no more than your usual course of duty. However if they dont put you on the course, there is nothing stopping you from complaining to them....
