Do most job applications ask males(ages 18-26) if they have signed up with the selective service?

Just wondering if this is a legal way to discriminate in hiring someone

Because it is law.

No, it is not done as a legal way to discriminate against someone but rather as a way for the Selective Services to keep tabs on individuals who either have or have not signed up.

Rick K
I don't think I've ever seen an application which asks that question.

But you need to register. There is no draft, and it's not likely there will be. But not registering can land you in jail.

tone
No, but you must sign up.

OPM
No, but if the job operates under certain Federal contracts then you cannot be paid if you have not registered.

Judy
Many applications ask that question. Since you'd legally be required to have signed up, if you hadn't it certainly couldn't be considered illegal for them to refuse to take your application if you hadn't.

Most applications do not ask. I am not sure if it is legal to ask. Generally speaking, a requirement for one gender and not another is illegal, but this might be an exception.

I have seen some asking and some that dont. Its not discrimination, its law. If a company knowingly hires someone who is not signed up, they are breaking the law.

It is kinda the same thing as requiring proof of legal us residency upon hiring.

most applications do NOT ask that, however it is the law (in the USA of course) that you have to register.

All men are required to register, but it is odd to me that it's on a job application.
