You go to law school. Could be at a university or a college.

First you get your BA or BS, could be at college or university. They you go to law school, 3 years for full time, 4 for night school. Unless you go to Vermont. Vermont still has the old fashion way where you can apprentise yourslef to an attorney, work under them for a number of years and then take the bar exam without having gone to law school. Probably the hard route, but no student loans that way.

First, you must obtain a four year college degree. The degree can be in any subject. If you want to be a patent lawyer, you must have a science degree. Second, you must take the Law School Admissions Test. Your college GPA will be combined with your LSAT score to form a law school quotient. This quotient will be reported with your application to a law school. You must spend an average of 3 years to get your law degree. After law school, you must take the Bar Exam in your state of residence. If you pass, you will be investigated by a committee on character and fitness. If you are allowed to proceed, you will wait to be sworn in by the appellate division of the jurisdictional district of your residence. Once you are sworn in, you may practice. However, you must continue to take continuing legal education classes. Good Luck. Todd L. Crawford, Esq.
