It is how you honor your word. If you gave your word to work and do the job the way it is meant to be done. Then you should do that. If you gave your word and it is not working for you and you are not doing the job the way it is meant to be done then you need to tell someone that. You might not keep you word about staying on the whole time. But you can honor you word by being straight with your boss and say this is not working for me or you.... I would like the the last few days off. You can call me if you have any questions or something like that.
Never burn a bridge, you might have to cross back over it.

You don't have to, but they don't have to pay you either.

You could leave early with your employer's agreement, especially if they have took someone on already to do your job but it is best to leave on amicable terms as you may need references, etc.

no,but it makes you look bad if you give them 2 weeks notice, then dont fulfill it.

It is a matter of personal integrity: if you say you will stay on for a week, or 2 weeks, and you don't, you have broken a promise. It may or may not affect your future employment, and employers are so afraid to exchange info due to federal over-sight, that it probably will not be disclosed on an employment background investigationl Also, and most importantly of all, your present employer would know that you didn't keep your word. Do you want that?

Not always it just depends on the situation and sometimes what job you have that you are leaving. My mom has only worked with the company for about a year and a half or so and the new job she has was offered to her she didn't go looking for it. She gave her notice a week ago and has missed a few days of work, but my brother was running a high fever one day. The other days she really just wanted some time off.

That depends...are you asking legally, morally, or financially. Only YOU can answer that. They cannot fire you but what about future references if things don't work out???

You're supposed to. Your employer can take you to court for any costs which you cause them to incur ... for example, if they need to get a temp to cover the period that you don't work, then they can sue for the cost of the temp. The reality is that many employers wouldn't do it because the legal costs would be too expensive to make it worthwhile, but then they might do it just to be difficult.

It could also affect your references. They would be within your rights to tell another employer that you didn't work your notice. If you piss them off enough, then they could decide to bring up a few not very positive things in your reference.

Now, I think many people are not quick enough to try to negotiate regarding this. If you have annual leave owing, it might be that you can take this leave during your notice period. If you need to leave because your new employer wants you to start by a particular date, then tell them this and ask if they could be flexible. The bottom line is, legally you have to work your notice, but in reality there is no reason not to ask if you can not work it.

Officially, it would cost them more to legally enforce it so they probably wouldnt take it any further. If you got paid with a lie month / week, they can withhold your wages.

It is better to come to an agreement with them though, ask if you can be considered to be released early. If you have holiday days that you havent used you can ask to take them off your notice period. It is better all round if you dont leave without notice - it wont impress your future employers because it shows that you will probably leave them in the lurch if you did it to another company.

You were glad of the job when you 1st got it, so you should be fair and stick to your side of the deal and work out your notice if possible. If you dont think this is an option, you will have to negotiate with the current company and hope they agree.

:o)

Yes you do. If you leave before the end of your notice period, the company can keep all money owed to you since the last pay day AND sue you for breach of contract.

you should give them one months notice , than again i am not sure the law in Scotland, if its different then here in LONDON, and rest of UK. Reason for giving them one months notice is that , they need to find somebody to replace you , and if and when they do and you are still there than you can train them .
if i was you i would give one months notice depending on when you are planing to leave the job, and one thing i would do is that see when you are in titled to your new holidays from your old place if it falls before you leave than you will not get paid for your holidays i think , unless you have already boOKed than you will be ok as long as they have given you your holiday confirmation, you need to check that with you union if you have one , or one of your good friends who has been there for a long time, but don't let on about your move in any way .
good luck with your new job.
