Do you reveal it or not?

When you fill out job applications, especially online and it asks you what your race is do you tell your race or do you keep that information a secret? This is if you are any other race than caucasian. Be honest about this. For example, if you are Hispanic or African - American or any other race besides caucasian, do you feel that if you did tell your race that somehow it may prevent you from getting that job you want? Although on the application it says it is voluntary and it will not prohibit you from getting hired, do you really believe that if you hide your race it will not ruin your chances of getting hired? Additional Details I agree it is sad after 44 years people still have to worry about it.

On any form that asks my race, I don't answer unless I'm forced to. It bugs me. I'm Caucasian. My daughter is biracial (Hispanic and Caucasian). Few of those forms have room for biracial heritage.
Having said all that... Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prevents employment discrimination based on race.
It's sad to think that 44 years later, people still have to worry about it. |

I'm Caucasian and i do not divulge my race because it makes my chances of getting a job less. the purpose of asking what race is so that the employer has a more diversified group of employees. This question doesn't hurt people of ''minority'' groups, it helps them. But it is a way of holding down a group of people in America and not giving everyone a fair shot at a job (if the employer pays attention to those questions anyway). Businesses get tax breaks for hiring people of ''ethnic'' backgrounds, but not for hiring ''caucasions''. this is why i hate the question. our country was founded on the belief of freedom for all, yet we give tax breaks to businesses for not giving everyone a fair shot at a job. |

Ironically, the same act that provides for a ban on "discrimination based on race" requires employers to discriminate on the basis of race for access to employment (affirmative action).
AA policies might make it easier for you to get past the initial screening, and if the company really has a bigoted culture it will just manifest itself in your interviews anyway. IMO this makes it advantageous to supply your (non-caucasian) race.
This would be more significant in industries where your race/gener is under-represented or in any corporate setting, where there would be a strong focus on making sure AA applicants get a fair shot. |
