Do you think it is legal for a employer to give out everyone who works theres social security numbers?

I am fighting to get my unemployment and the employer gave me a paper at the hearing with everyones social security numbers on it.

Wow! I believe they can be fined for that. Quite a faux pas if you ask me. What's more, I wouldn't want that to be in my hands if I was you - they could wind up trying to hold YOU accountable for stealing the info or even for identity theft in future. If I were you I would handle this in a very FORMAL manner.

1) Contact your local Social Security office. Let them know that this information was given to you by your employer. Ask them what to do with it.

2) Write a letter to your employer telling them what they did. In states like New York and Georgia and others, they actually have laws that fine companies for divulging this information.

3) Send a letter to all of the employees that were on the list letting them know that the employer did this. They should be concerned about their identities and credit, and should pursue getting credit reports to ensure no one else got this info and stole their identities.

Good luck.

thats completely illegal. people could be victims of identity theft because of that. (im not accusing you of identity theft.)
you could report him you know. and tell your co-workers what hes doing. im sure they'd be happy to get involved :)

Absolutely not!!! Your employer is in violation of several Federal laws.

No, that is completely illegal> Not only for him to give outthe full number with out permission (should not have given more than th last four numbers) but if you are caught, you could be charged with identity theft.

I don't know if it's against the law but morally it is wrong. I'd be bringing that to someone's attention at the top. They could be sued by some of the employees if someone were to use that for illegal gain.

it is not legal. Schools and such cant even use them as student ID numbers anymore. You SS# and your name are all someone needs to start acting like you. Have your address and it is even worse. I know when I lost my bank acct #, my name and ss# were the two things they asked for.

A lot of us give out our addresses or telephone numbers pretty freely, especially to co-workers. Imagine a person having that list and then getting that information as well .....

Makes you wonder how many other people have copies of that paper.

I definately agree with the previous suggestions including letting the people on the list know so they can red flag their accounts just in case someone isnt as honest as you and has a copy of that list.

It certainly isn't and especially with all the problems of I.D. theft out there today. If I was an employee and I found out about that I'd be livid (and possibly looking to sue)!

No it's not right
and i think if you look into it u would find it is illegal
good luck.
