Does anybody have any possible idea why I didn't get this job?

I know this sounds crazy because no one on here knows the real answer but here it goes. I am a twenty four year old african american with 57 college credits. I applied for a corrections officer job in Florida. They said that you don't have to be certified but you need to pass a few tests. I passed the CJBAT with a 90 (min. score to pass is 70) I passed the P.A.T. in 4min and 20sec and they give you about 6min to complete it also I scored very well on the written test. Anyways I did the interview and I explained that I was looking for a career in corrections and I believed that it went well but I got a letter saying that I didn't pass the interview. I don't understand what that means I answered everything good and I met all the qualifications. To make matters worse, a friend of mine passed the interview and is going on to the hiring process and his scores were lower than mine. Not saying it really matters but he is white and he never been to college

I do not think that it has anything to do with race. If you did not pass the interview, it could have been something to do with body language, how you sat in your chair or how you answered your questions.
Also, I agree that you are probably overqualified. They may be afraid that you are going to go on to finish college and leave them for something else even if you said that your interet is in corrections. Not a lot of corrections officers have degrees. |

There could be many reasons that you were not hired. Just because you tested well does not mean that you interviewed well. We have no idea how you handled yourself in the interview. Maybe the interviewer did not like the way you answered their question or felt that your personality would not be right for a corrections officer. There could be other reasons as well. Unless the interviewer is willing to let you know exactly why you were not hired, then you should just go on to the next opportunity. |

It sounds like you are overqualified for the position |

There are so many levels to a job interview -- you may have even seemed TOO eager. My bet is that your personality was not a good fit, as judged by the interviewer.
I don't believe because you scored well that you're over-qualified ... and I don't believe it would be a race issue -- there are plenty of corrections officers of all races.
They may have thought you were using this job as a stepping-off point and wouldn't stay long. They wouldn't want to invest the time and money to train you only to have you leave in a short time for bigger and better jobs. Be careful how much you reveal to the interviewer.
Good Luck! |

Leave out that you are in college if applying for a full-time position. You don't have to tell them that. Also, see if you can contact your local employment agency and talk to someone about how to interview (many agencies also have classes on it). You might find a red flag you didn't know about. In most areas in the USA, you can find that type of agency by calling your local United Way (usually that's 211 on your phone) and asking for employment services. |
