Not all employers check the same information, but MOST employers contract through a third party to do their background checks - all of which will conduct a National Criminal Database check. However, employers have to double-check that information against the actual court record itself to verify that it hasn't been expunged or dismissed and also to ensure that it's the same person.
That being said - the timeline varies by state as to how far back an employer can consider. Most states it is 7 years, however, in many states, your entire record will still show up even if its been longer than 7 years. In CA for example - you absolutely cannot consider someone's record that is older than 7 years old - but in Oklahoma, you can look at something that was done 20 years ago and still consider it.
NOTE however, that if you were convicted 10 years ago, but served jail time or are on probation of at least 3 years - your final release of control date (i.e. last day or jail or probation) can and often IS used to still pull that information into the "7 year window" even in California. |

I believe a felony will always be on a record, therefore will appear on a background check. |

may i suggest a reading of '48 days to work u love' d.miller . a good book for going forward and plenty of fresh reference material.
