Does anyone else have a problem finding a job because they don't speak spanish?

Every time I begin to search for a job I have great difficulty making it though one question. Do you speak spanish? I am an intelligent person. I was top of my class in my catholic highschool. I decided to go to school to become an x-ray technician. Upon completion of my program I encounter a problem that would lead me to change careers. I live in Houston and I could not make it past "the question". I never even got an interview and believe me I searched. I would get a call and then when they found out I don't speak spanish, well, that was the end of that. After 6 months and no job I decided to turn to office work. Then I began another school as a paralegal. Not only do I have a 4.0 and 2 years of legal experience, but I have many other skills that would make me an asset to any firm. The only problem is, I can't make it past that question. And what I have noticed from my peers that took spanish in highschool is that is not good enough either. You almost need a native tongue

Well I speak Spanish with near native fluency. I was a Spanish teacher and I have an hispanic last name. I live in the midsouth and the only job Spanish helps me get is teaching. I think you should keep pursuing this. Most Americans don't speak Spanish because the 2 years of it in high school is not enough for you to get a good grasp. Go back to the places you applied to find out who they hired. Why do they need an x-ray technician who speaks Spanish? They have translators and patient advocates in the hospitals for just that reason. Even though you live in an area with a large hispanic population you should not have to speak Spanish to get a job. Go back to the schools where you got your x-ray technician training and paralegal training. Get them to give you some leads. Good luck or should I say Buena Suerte.

If I were in a state where there were a lot of Spanish speaking people and I was looking for a job with lots of public contact, I'd take a couple of Spanish classes to at least get reasonably competent in it. Check with your local community college - they are usually not real expensive. Native tongue is nice, but from a class or two you can learn enough to communicate - and to answer "the question" the way they need it to be answered.

Well speaking another language is becoming a big part of the working industry. I think it helps, might get you a few more dollars but you still should be able to find a job, even if you don't speak Spanish

Yes and I hate it. I just don't understand why aren't the spanish speaking people being forced to learn english? Why must we learn spanish to accomidate them? It doesn't make any sense and it makes me hate the direction we're all going in. Good luck with he job search!
