I tend to walk around in my socks in my own office, but for me I always wear my shoes outside of my office. |

i have done this and i dont think there's anything wrong with it. as long as the persons feet dont smell. i cant see a hygiene problem either. do you eat off of the carpeted floors in your office? working in an office where a person is comfortable enough to do that, is I think, a good thing. now, it would not be appropriate to do it with clients around of course, but if it's just coworkers, i dont see anything wrong with it at all! |

Honestly? I think you are overreacting.
Focus on your own work, if you are wearing shoes, and you DON'T own the law practice, then it shouldn't matter to you. |

They really feel comfortable at work maybe? Feel at home.
:-) :-) He he he
Sorry... not sure what to say. I work and live in Melbourne Australia, never once I saw a partner in either Law firm or Accounting firm did it. I saw some people changed outfits or shoes half way through the day depending on what they were doing - but not walking in their socks.
Maybe Americans in general are more casual and less uptight? Maybe just a different attitude towards work? Maybe it helps the Americans relax?
I won't be worried about hygiene - the carpet itself is pretty grotty and dirty anyway. Especially at my workplace. |

Some of the younger girls here do it; even barefoot. I couldn't care less. |

Hmmm... I am in socks at my desk as I type this. I sometimes walk to the nearby kitchen in my sock feet, but I don't feel like it is really acceptable. I'm at an age (near retirement) where I am less and less concerned about things like this and peer pressure. I have seen no evidence that I am grossing people out, but perhaps I am. That isn't my goal at all. I will keep your response in mind.
I have some medical problems with my feet. Many people do, there are all kinds of common foot ailments. Shoes make my feet feel worse so I take them off at my desk. That is no excuse for grossing people out, but maybe is a reason people take their shoes off.
As far as hygene.. one could argue that it is more hygenic than wearing shoes, the same shoes you walk all over outside in. There is organic material out there to step in (rotten leaves, dog poop, old sandwiches, mud, bird poop, etc). Lots of parasites and bacteria can be brought in. Tiny little Pin Worm eggs like to hitchhike on things like shoes. People spit on sidewalks. The spit drys, you don't see it, but the viruses present can still be alive and be stirred up for you to breathe or be brought inside, then stirred up later from the carpet. My feet, like probably most, are washed at least once a day, then dressed in sparkling clean socks. They are clean and do not stink. Our hands are probably dirtier than our feet. |

That's just gross! I usually wearing heels every day, but I will only take them off if I am sitting at my desk and no one can see my feet! There's no way I would walk around the office barefoot, that's just nasty! |
