Martha Stewart did prison and has a felony and she makes over a million a year. So what's the big deal about felonies?

yes it really does..martha had a career before hand...thats different!
The big deal is youve done something worth being locked up for, any employer who had the choice between qualifications or no qualifications would choose the person with qualifications. Same situation with felonys and prison.
If an employer has to choose between no criminal record and a criminal record..who do you think they would want to employ? |

If you are not already established in a career, it has a devastating effect. Martha Stewart is also self-employed, so it doesn't matter. SHE is the company. Your average employer doesn't want to take the risk.
AMENDED:
I should also add that employers need to consider their non-felonious employees. Most people will not work in a place with convicted felons for obvious reasons. Employers who want to keep decent, qualified, HONEST employees will not hire a felon. |

A felony is a barrier to employment. The better employers do background checks and usually do not want to hire anyone with a criminal record.
If you have a criminal record you have to work harder to make it.
Employers can legally discriminate against anyone with a criminal record. |

depends on what the crime was and how it relates to work you're looking for - if you were convicted of embezzlement, forget any kind of job involving money or accounting or anything where you might have access to company checkbooks, etc |
